Chapter 6

Shanni Davis

Shanni did what she’d done the last three Wednesday nights. She’d had dinner with the kids, watched a movie or read to them, then tucked them into bed. When she settled into her room, she turned on the rodeo she’d recorded Sunday night. She missed Cole. This was the most she saw him—eight seconds at a time—since he’d gone back to work bull riding a few weeks ago. That wasn’t true—they had video calls nearly every night, but it wasn’t the same as being held and kissed. Cole had left the day after the carnival. His first rodeo was in Oklahoma, then to Wyoming, and then another in Tennessee. His doctor had cleared him to get back, and he booked a ticket and got on the docket as quickly as he could. She had missed seeing him around the ranch and his random drop-ins at the house in the evenings.

She was getting the hang of things at work, but the workload never quit. She worked at home every night and weekend, leaving very little time to spend with her kids. Drew was a star uncle, keeping them entertained.

Rhett peeked his head through her door. “Mommy, Cole is going to call you.”

Shanni opened her mouth to ask how he knew that when her phone buzzed with Cole’s picture on the screen. “Hey there. Rhett just told me you’d call. How did he know that?”

“He rings the doorbell on my house and talks to me through the camera there. I waited to call you until I thought he’d get home.”

“That brilliant, sneaky little guy.” Shanni laughed with Cole.

“Yeah. I think he’s pretty great too.” After a pause, he asked, “Hey, how’s your Thursday looking?” She could hear the excitement in his voice and the corners of his eyes crinkled above his smile.

“Tomorrow? Surprisingly clear.” For a change. “Why do you ask?”

“I figured that it’s high time we go on a proper date. I can fly in just in time. What do you say?”

Shanni sat up on her bed. “You’re going to be in town?” Without waiting for a response, she said, “I’d love to. Am I wearing jeans or a dress on this date?”

“Oh, it’s definitely a dress kind of night.” His cowboy accent thickened.

“All right, I’m intrigued. I don’t suppose you’ll tell me your plans?” she asked.

“Not a one. I’ll pick you up at 6:30 tomorrow. I won’t get to stay long, but I need to see you.”

Though they hadn’t said they were officially together, she enjoyed his company—maybe too much. She only had to wait a few hours to find out and to see Cole again.

Their conversation continued for an hour before they said good night. Shanni clicked off the call. It wouldn’t be like this forever. Rodeo season ended before Christmas, then they’d be together more. She prayed he won and didn’t commit to another season or he’d be gone again by mid-January.

She had to pull herself back to think about the positive. They had a great place to live.
